Illnesses in school

21st May 2024
There have been a number of reported cases of Chickenpox in Naíscoil and Gaelscoil na mBeann in recent days. Please keep an eye on your child(ren) for the development of any new rashes/ red spots. If chickenpox is confirmed, your child should remain at home until all vesicles have crusted over.

As reported in the news, instances of whooping cough are also high at the moment throughout the country. The first signs of whooping cough are similar to a cold, with a runny nose and sore throat.

But after about a week, the infection can develop into coughing bouts that last a few minutes and are typically worse at night. Young children may also make a distinctive "whoop" or have difficulty breathing after a bout of coughing. If you suspect that your child may have whooping cough, you should speak to your GP ASAP. The bacteria spread through coughs and sneezes, so experts advise members of a family in which it has been diagnosed to stay at home until three weeks after the symptoms began or 48 hours after the patient started taking antibiotics.
